Abstract

1482135 Energy absorbing BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 8 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 35049/74 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] An impact absorbing system on a motor vehicle body comprises a bumper 3 and a bearer 5 interconnected by energy absorbing elements 12, the bearer 5 being mounted in a cavity 6 in the vehicle bodywork 1. The bumper 3 and bearer 5 are of U-shaped cross-section with limbs 10 and 11 of the bumper received between limbs 7 and 8 of the bearer for sliding in U- section guide members 34 of self-lubricating plastics material. The members 34 contain restoring elements formed by pads of foamed material 39 acting to restore the bumper to its original position after displacement in an impact, this position being defined by co-operation of abutments 37 and 38 on the members 34 and bumper 3 respectively. Each element 12 is connected between the bumper web 25 and a supporting rail 27 within the bearer 5, fluid being forced from a first chamber 13 through constricted passages 14 into a second smaller chamber 15 on impact. Chamber 13 is formed by a bellows 16 and chamber 15 by a hemispherical elastically-expandable bag 23 which tends to force fluid back into chamber 13 after an impact. Additional restoring elements, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided comprising blocks (44) of rubber or other elastomeric material which contain cavities (45) and are connected between the bumper web and a supporting rail within the bearer.
