Abstract
1386340 Refining steel PENNSYLVANIA ENG CORP and AVRR 28 Oct 1972 [10 Dec 1971] 48547/72 Heading C7D The composition of steel is controlled in a bottom-blowing converter by the following sequential steps, (a) holding a quantity of molten ferrous metal in the converter, (b) after the converter is turned to its blowing position, blowing a non-oxidizing gas with entrained finely divided desulphurizing agent through one of a pair of tuyere passageways while blowing argon through the other passageway. (c) blowing oxygen and at least finely divided entrained burnt line through the said one tuyere passageway while blowing hydrocarbon through the other until the carbon content of the melt reaches the level aimed for and (d) blowing argon through the pair of passageways simultaneously for a short time to remove from the melt dissolved hydrogen and other non- oxidizing gas such as nitrogen. Argon may also be blown through both passageways during charging of molten metal until the vessel is turned up and also during emptying of the vessel. The oxygen blowing may reduce the carbon content of the metal slightly below the desired final content, the desired content then being achieved by continuing the hydrocarbon injection and replacing the oxygen injection with argon.
