Abstract
1386061 Casting processes FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 30 April 1973 [1 May 1972] 20336/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] In a metal casting process such as continuous steel casting, a flux comprising wollastonite and a low melting flux is added to the mould prior to, during or after teeming. The flux serves to prevent oxidation, to insulate, to lubricate and to remove alumina. The wollastonite may be pure synthetic or natural CaO.SiO 2 or CaO.SiO 2 in solid solution with at least one of SiO 2 , CaO and Al 2 O 3 , e.g. pseudo wollastonite or rankmite. The low melting flux constituent with a melting point of 700-1300‹ C. may be Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , NaF, KF, LiF, AlF 3 , Na 3 AlF s , CaF 2 , boric acid or a borate and comprises up to 45% wt. of the flux. The flux may also contain millscale up to 15% wt. of expanded vermiculite, perlite or pumice and up to 20% wt. of carbonaceous powder. A preferred flux contains 50-75% wollastonite, 4-20% perlite and 1-12% Na 2 CO 3 . 0À5-1À5 kg. of flux is added per 1000 kg. of cast steel.
