Abstract

1385808 Tamperproof closures SUNBEAM PLASTICS CORP 18 Dec 1972 [27 Jan 1972] 58339/72 Heading B8T A tamperproof and childproof aerosol dispenser 20 has a body 21, a breast portion 22 and a valve 23 with a feed tube 24 and dispensing nozzle 25, the valve 23 being retained by an annular sealing collar 26. The overcap 27, made from resilient material, comprises an outer wall 28 and an inner concentric skirt 29, with an inwardly turned retaining lip 30 frictionally engaging below collar 26 when the cap is in place on the can. The lip 30 is slotted with a pair of lugs 31 on opposite sides of the slot. Overcap 27 also has a rotatable locking element 32 with a cylindrical body 33 which fits rotatably into a well 34 formed in overcap 27 between wall 28 and skirt 29. The upper end of lock 32 has a head 35 fitting into counterbore 36 of the top 37 of cap 27, the lock body extending through well 34 and carrying an oblong key 38 at its end, which locates between lugs 31 on skirt 29. Thus, rotation of lock 32 to its "open" position causes lugs 31 to spread apart and release lip 30 from below collar 26, permitting overcap 27 to be removed from can 20. Since the oblong key 38 has rounded ends, and skirt 29 is resiliently biased, release of pressure on lock 32 will permit the skirt 29 to return to its normal, closed position, when it can be clipped back over collar 26 to replace overcap 27 after use. To ensure cap 27 is tamperproof, a frangible tab 41, moulded in head 35, is located in recess 42 in the top 37 of cap 27, and lock 32 cannot be moved into the "open" position without breaking tab 41 off. The locking device 32 is retained in position in the overcap by dogs 39 which snap below lower edge of well 34 on initial assembly.
