Abstract

1384553 False twister ODA GOSEN KOGYO KK and OGURA HOSEKI SEIKI KOGYO KK 10 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 57-5-11/71 Heading DID [Also in Division F2] In a false twister comprising a turbinebladed rotary member having a filament-passage containing a twist pin, the member is rotated by compressed gas and is maintained at most at a predetermined speed by an eddy current brake. Spindle 11, Fig. 2, is rotated by air flowing from one or two ducts 20 to impinge on spindle blades 13, and is radially supported by air bearings 17, 18. Axial spindle loads are resisted by air flowing through ducts 19a to impinge on the end faces of the blades. Alternatively, magnetisable members are mounted on opposing end faces of the spindle, and the bearings, or of a spindle end and a housing, so as to repel one another when magnetised. The speed of spindle rotation is measured by passing light through equispaced slits in the rotating spindle to a receiver which produces a signal varying with the speed of rotation. The signal controls an A.C. voltage supplied to eddy-current brake 25, Fig. 6, comprising pairs of diametrically opposed coils A, B spaced about end 14 of spindle 11, the brake responding to the change in spindle speed to maintain the spindle speed at most at a predetermined speed.
