Abstract

1384422 Dry shavers ULTRASONIC SYSTEMS Inc 27 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 49753/72 Heading B4B [Also in Division H2] A dry shaver comprises a guard member 25 having a plurality of apertures 32, a cutter member 30 mounted adjacent the guard for cooperation therewith, means 18 for moving the cutter member to produce a gross cutting movement across the apertures, and means 65, 65a for vibrating the guard member and/or the cutter member at an ultrasonic rate. The cutter member 30 is vibrated by a motor 18 energized from mains or a re-chargeable battery. In order to reduce the friction force between the cutter member and the guard member the latter is vibrated in the ultrasonic range by means of transducers 65, e.g. piezoelectric, secured to the guard member; the vibrations may be in a direction normal and/or parallel to the skin contact surface of the guard member. The transducers may be connected to the exterior surface of the guard; the cutter-member may be formed from a transducer material itself. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, transducers 65a are secured to the cutter member and not the guard member as in the previous embodiment. An ultrasonic converter 62a is contained in the housing 12a of the shaver. In a further embodiment, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), transducers 65b are secured to both the cutter member and the guard member. In the construction shown in Fig. 14, the cutter member 30c is mounted on a transmission member 46c coupled to an ultrasonic motor 65c adapted to produce ultrasonic vibrations in the cutter member only in the directions 90c, 92c. The gross cutting movement in this embodiment is produced by an electromagnetic motor 18c. The ultrasonic motor is mounted on resilient supports 110c which thus permit the vibrations produced by both motors 65c, 18c. The ultrasonic vibration generator 62c is mounted within the shaver housing 12c. In modification, instead of electric motor means 18, 18c for producing the gross low frequency vibrations mechanical means, e.g. a hand-wound spring motor may be used. The curved guard member may be replaced by one with a plane skin contact surface, 25c and also assist the penetration of hairs into the hole 32c of the foil. The reduced friction enables a smaller main vibration electromagnetic motor 18c to be used. A choke 140c is provided.
