Abstract

1384169 Bonding metals DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 24 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 24459/72 Headings C7F and C7U A process for boriding metals, e.g. steel, comprises heating metal articles in contact with a boriding powder comprising a boron-yielding agent, an activator, and free carbon. Suitable boron-yielding agents include Fe-B, B 4 C, borax, boron itself and mixtures thereof. Suitable activators include KCl, NaCl, NH 4 Cl, CaCl 2 , BaCl 2 , BaF 2 , MgF 2 , KF or a mixture of two or more of these. The free carbon can be in the form of ground charcoal or carbon black. The activator is present in an amount from 2%-10%, and the free carbon from 2%-40%. The powder may also contain a filler.
