Roller bearings.-Bearing-rollers are formed with ellipsoidal surfaces and flat ends so proportioned that the moment of inertia of each roller about its normal axis of rotation is greater than that about any other axis passing through its centre. The radius of curvature of the rollers c is less than the radius of curvature of the raceways. With this arrangement, the rollers tend to return to the normal position if slightly displaced. By eccentrically displacing one of the race-rings the full number of rollers can be inserted edgeways without the need for filling- openings. the rollers being afterwards spaced around the bearing and turned into the running position.
