Roller bearings.-The rollers 3 are so proportioned that the moment of inertia of each roller about its normal axis of rotation exceeds that about any other axis passing through its centre of gravity. One or both of the races have the shape of spherical surfaces or of surfaces having longer radii of curvature than those of the spherical surfaces up to the limit of cylindrical surfaces. The rollers are transversely convex, the radius of curvature being greater than the radius of the axial figure of projection of the roller, but equal to the radius of transverse curvature of one race, and less than the radius of transverse curvature of the other race, if this be concave or cylindrical. Several forms are shown, Fig. 1 showing a spherical outer race 5 and a cylindrical inner race 4. In each case, the rollers may be readily inserted by tilting one of the race rings. Specification 117,341 is referred to.
