Abstract

1382356 Immersion heater S M ELKINS 9 Nov 1972 [9 Nov 1971] 51842/72 Heading H5H An immersion heater comprises a flexible heating unit 16 mounted on the end of a hollow support column 10 by a resilient seal 15 and connected to a supply by leads 28 extending through the column 10 and seal 15, the unit 16 being in the form of a flexible conductive core layer 35 provided with parallel spaced electrodes 38 sandwiched between and bonded to flexible insulating sheets 36, 37 and the column 10 being adapted for clamping against a wall 11 of a vessel, e.g. an aquarium. The core layer 35 comprises fibreglass cloth impregnated with carbon loaded polyimide or other resin and the electrodes are formed of copper or aluminium. The insulating sheets 36, 37 are formed of nylon, polyester, P.T.F.E. or silicone rubber or by several layers, e.g. a polyester layer coated with silicone rubber. The leads 28 are secured to terminals 39 which are held against electrodes 38 by connector posts 40, the leads, terminals and posts being covered by the seal 15 which is made of silicone rubber and prevents water entering the column 10. Column 10 comprises telescopic sections 13, 14 so that the level of unit 16 can be varied. A U-shaped portion of section 14 and section 18 is adjustable by means of a nut 20 to clamp the heater to wall 11. A thermostat adjustment 26 and indicator lamp 27 are carried in section 18. Water and air tubes 29, 30 pass down column 10 and through seal 15. The heating unit 16 may be enclosed in an oval guard perforated along its upper surface, or in an oval guard of expanded metal or plastics. The column 10 may be near one corner of the heating unit (Fig. 7, not shown). The heating unit 16 may be rolled into a tube and embedded in a tubular plug of resilient sealing material, a perforate guard being removably mounted on the plug.
