A sensitizing pigment, e.g. a 10<SP>-7</SP>-10<SP>-3</SP> M solution of methylene blue, may be added to the culture prior to the irradiation. Examples use Pseudomonas fluorescens, Clostridium butyrlcum, As pergillus oryzae, Candida guilliermondii and Bacillus brevis.
