Abstract

The antibiotic pyrollnitrin, also known as antibiotic A10338 (Specification 1,097,173), is prepared by cultivating a microorganism selected from Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17810, ATCC 17416, ATCC 17417 or ATCC 17419 or Pseudomonas multivorans ATCC 17460, ATCC 17478, ATCC 17759 or ATCC 17760 in a culture medium containing assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salts under submerged aerobic conditions until a substantial amount of the antibiotic is produced in the culture broth. The antibiotic may be recovered from the fermentation broth by diluting the broth with a water-miscible organic solvent such as methanol, filtering and extracting the clarified broth with a water-immiscible solvent such as chloroform. The antibiotic has antibacterial and antifungal properties and may be used in the treatment of mildew or anthracnose in plants. A pharmaceutical composition comprises pyrollnitrin and a carrier.
