Abstract
1382164 Gumming labels ADDRESSOGRAPH MULTIGRAPH CORP 9 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 5993/72 Heading B2L Label applying apparatus comprises a rotating label supporting suction wheel 14 which moves the labels past a glue applicator head which ejects discrete streams of glue dependent upon the arrival and correct location of a label. Cams 36 on the wheel engage a lever 32 which in turn strikes projections 70 on the piston of a pump 30 allowing adhesive to be ejected against the action of a ball valve. Liquid adhesive enters the pump 30 from a reservoir 24 via a pipe 26. A return pipe to the reservoir is normally closed by a solenoid valve 84. If no label is present on the wheel a photocell 96 opens valve 84 so that when lever 32 actuates the pump 30 adhesive is returned to the reservoir 24 and none is ejected. The movement of lever 32 can be adjusted by means of a screw 90 and thus the movement of the piston in pump 30 and the amount of adhesive ejected is controlled. A dam 104 is provided in the label supporting surface of the wheel and in use lies behind the leading edge of the label. In use this dam causes adhesive to cover the leading part of the label with an even coating.
