Abstract
1381902 Pipe couplings SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 25 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3394/72 Heading F2G In a ball-joint coupling having a flexible envelope 4, resilient forces urging the pipe sections A and B apart increase the sealing pressure exerted by ring 3 on spherical surface 1. The pipe sections may be urged apart by a helical spring or by the resilience of envelope 4. Alternatively or additionally compressed gas may be introduced or may leak into the space 6 to provide or contribute to the sealing pressure. The space 6 may be filled with porous and flexible insulating material. The pipe sections may also be insulated (Figs. 4-6, not shown) and the pipe line used for liquefied natural gas. 0-ring seals of P.T.F.E. may be used in conjunction with scrapers for cleaning the spherical surface. An additional sealing ring may be resiliently urged into contact with the surface 1.
