1381755 Substituted (N-alkyl amino) acrylamides CALGON CORP 6 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 50988/72 Heading C2C Novel compounds of formula are made by reacting together in the presence of an acid, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile and an amine compound capable of forming a carbonium ion and having the formula or a quaternary or acid salt thereof in which the group is replaced by in which formulae each of R 1 and R 2 , which are similar or dissimilar, is a C 1-18 linear or branched alkyl group or an aralkyl group having up to 10 carbon atoms, or is a nitrogen-attached heterocyclic group having one or more hetero atoms; R 3 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group; R 4 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-5 linear or branched alkyl group and R 5 is phenyl, C 1-4 alkyl, or substituted phenyl in which the substituent(s) is/are C 1-4 alkyl and/or C 1-4 alkoxy; or R 4 and R 5 together form a bicyclic group of at least 7 carbon atoms optionally substituted with a linear or branched C 1-5 alkyl group; R 6 is hydrogen or methyl; R 7 is a halogen atom, a hydroxy or alkoxy group or an alkyl carbonyloxy group having up to 5 carbon atoms, Z is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted C 7-16 aralkyl or C 1-16 alkyl group and X‹ is an anion, and n is 1 or 2. The amine starting materials may be made by reacting a secondary amine, formaldehyde and an olefinically unsaturated compound in an acid medium.
