Abstract

1381710 Stabilization of α-sulpho-fatty acids UNILEVER Ltd 16 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 7178/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] α-Sulpho-fatty acids prepared by the sulphonation of fatty acids using a SO 3 /diluent gas mixture as sulphonating agent are mixed with an alkyl benzene, having 1 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, within one hour of preparation of the α-sulpho-fatty acids, thereby inhibiting colour formation on storage. Mixing is preferably effected within 1 to 5 minutes of said preparation using 0À5 to 10% by weight of the alkyl benzene (e.g. dodecyl benzene) based on the weight of α-sulpho-fatty acid. The salts of the stabilized acids, preferably bleached, are used in detergent compositions. Specified fatty acid starting materials are synthetic and natural (C 8-22 )-saturated monocarboxylic acids, e.g. hardened tallow, palm oil, coconut and fish oil fatty acids.
