1381429 Liquid crystal cell ELECTROVAC FABRIKATION ELEKTROTECHNISCHER SPEZIALARTIKEL GmbH 21 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 29566/73 Heading H4F In a cell comprising a layer of liquid crystal material between two plates sealed at their margins, a thin film electrode is disposed on the major surface of at least one plate and has a portion extending over an edge face of the plate where it is covered by a metal coating applied by stoving, vapour deposition or cathodic deposition. Solder per se may be deposited on the coating or a metal pad or blade soldered thereto, to connect the electrode to an external circuit. If electrodes are disposed on both plates, with superimposed extending portions, the metal coating interconnects them. The position of an aperture in the edge of the cell for filling purposes may coincide with the position of the extending portions, so that, after filling, the cell is hermetically sealed with synthetic resin (for interconnection of the two electrodes only) or with an amalgam (alloy), or conductive adhesive (for additional connection to an external circuit). The edge of the plate(s) may be bevelled where the extending portion of the electrode exits, or along the entire edge. As particularly described, one electrode may be reflective, and the plates are of glass and sealed together with glass solder. A stack of cells (alternate plates and liquid crystal material) may be formed, the respective extending electrode portions (and filling apertures) being offset from each other. The metal coating may include a first layer of chromium for adhesion to the electrode, a second easily solderable layer (copper, silver, tin) and a third optional oxidation resistant layer, such as gold.
