Abstract

1380405 Elevated railways LEMAND ENG Ltd 14 Sept 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 44134/71 Heading B7L [Also in Division El] An earth-working machine has a carriage that can be suspended from and progressed along an overhead rail system and a digging tool-carrying articulated arm 51, 52 supported by the carriage. The carriage is a two-part carriage 35, 37 with one or both of said parts 35, 37 having clamp means 43 by which the part(s) can be locked to the rail system so that the carriage can be advanced stepwise in one or both directions along the rail system by appropriate setting of the clamp means and actuation of the fluidpowered rams 39 extending between the parts. The rams, preferably hydraulically actuated, are housed within the box section configuration of one of the carriage parts. To allow for settlement of the support means of the rail system, e.g. tunnel arches, adjacent ends of aligned rail sections 22 are supported from the means by a universal coupling involving brackets 27, 28 pivotally connected together about an axis 30 and plates 29 pivotally connected with the bracket 28 about an axis 31 and with the adjacent rail ends about axes parallel to the axis 31.
