Abstract
1379682 Drawing; extruding WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 8 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 10704/72 Heading B3P [Also in Division G3] The orifice 30 of a die 20 for deforming rod 2 into wire 3 is constricted if a transverse dimension of the wire 3 increases. In one embodiment, a carbide steel extrusion or drawing die 20 is surrounded by segments 19 which are engaged by an encircling band 24. The diameter of the wire 3 is monitored by a sensing device 4 producing an electrical signal proportional to the wire diameter. When the diameter of the wire 3 increases above a predetermined limit, an increase in fluid pressure in a chamber 25 is produced by a transducer 5 causing the segments 19 and the die orifice diameter to be constricted. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the wire 3 is passed through a chamber (34) and a communicating conduit (35) supplied with fluid by a valve (39) and/or pump (38), delivering a constant rate of fluid, so that leakage of fluid occurs from the conduit (35). If the diameter of the wire increases, the clearance between it and the conduit (35) decreases causing an increase of fluid pressure in the chamber 25. A fluid pressure amplifier (41) (Fig. 4, not shown) may be positioned in the conduit 27 leading to the chamber 25.
