Abstract
1378681 Fuelling reactors UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Jan 1973 [11 Feb 1972] 6521/72 Heading G6C A fuel element transportation canister comprises a cylinder 1 forming a primary chamber for containing fuel elements 23 submerged in water, and six tubes 3 disposed about the cylinder 1 forming a secondary chamber for containing water and pressurized air. The tubes 3 are interconnected at their lower ends by a manifold 4 and connected with the cylinder 1 by a coiled tube 5 which makes one full turn about the cylinder 1. Within the cylinder 1 there is a removable magazine 6 comprising six open-ended tubes 7 which house the fuel elements 23. The magazine 6 is loaded with irradiated fuel elements under water. To load the magazine into the canister, the canister is lowered into the water with its cover removed so that the cylinder 1 fills up and the tubes 3 are partially filled from the lower end by way of the coiled tube 5, the air trapped within the tubes 3 being compressed by hydraulic pressure. The loaded magazine 6 is then placed in the cylinder 1, the cover of which is secured by bolting. The coiled tube 5 serves as an air lock to prevent the trapped air passing from the tubes 3 to the cylinder 1 during handling and conveyance but enables water to flow between the cylinder 1 and the tubes 3 due to volume changes caused by temperature variations. The use of tubes for the secondary chamber instead of an annular jacket enables more efficient cooling of the cylinder during conveyance in a transportation flask.
