Abstract
An irradiated fuel transport flask has the water filled inner storage chamber surrounded by a neutron absorbing shield of depleted uranium and an external water jacket. Favourable weight and cost reductions are effected by the combination of depleted uranium and water, without down grading the structural and radiation shielding integrity of the flask. Then wall encasement with circumferential ribs to reinforce is used for the neutron shield and the ribs also act to dissipate decay heat to the water jacket. The external cladding of the jacket is corrugated to promote structural strength and the smooth profile facilitates decontamination. Valve stations for water filling, venting and pressure relieving are mounted on the internal cladding. Access to the inner chamber is by removal of a flanged bolted encased uranium shield. Lifting attachments are mounted on the flask sides.
