Abstract

1423561 Transportable shielded containers S L REESE 30 Jan 1973 4680/73 Heading B4Q A container for transporting radio-active materials, e.g. spent fuel elements or radioactive waste, comprises a cavity 1 surrounded by a beta-gamma radiation absorbing material 3, e.g. depleted uranium, and an outer wall 6 on which fin plates 10 are detachably mounted by means of bolts 16. The fin plates 10 each have fins 14 permanently affixed to a base-plate 12. Corrosion-resistant cladding 2, 4, such as stainless steel, covers both the internal and the external walls of the shield material 3. Neutron shielding is provided by filling the space between the cladding 4 and the outer wall 6 with borated water. The fin plates 10 are removed during loading and unloading and, therefore, need not be constructed of a material resistant to corrosion by decontaminating solutions. They are preferably constructed of Al or Al alloy. Where neutron shielding is not required, the fin plates 10 are mounted directly on the cladding 4. A conventional road trailer 20 is shown in Fig. 3 having a platform 22 on which fin plates 24 are pivotally mounted. A smooth exterior wall container 30 of similar construction to that shown in Fig. 2, but without fin plates, and containing radio-active material is placed in position on the platform 22 and the fin plates 24 are then assembled around the container, as shown in dashed lines. An alternative transportation vehicle (Fig. 6, not shown) takes the form of a trailer, the frame of which includes two longitudinally extending spaced apart parallel beams between which the container is supported by two yoke means interconnecting the beams. This trailer is so constructed that should the container/vehicle assembly be subjected to a free fall, it is the vehicle structure and never the container which contacts the ground. The large impact forces resulting from the fall are thus prevented from acting directly on the relatively weak container corners and edges and so the risk of container damage is minimized.
