Abstract

1324015 Transport flasks KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUER 2 Nov 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 51975/70 Heading B4Q A flask for transporting irradiated fuel elements 7 immersed in liquid metal coolant 8, e.g. Nak, in a receptacle 5 of neutron-absorbing material, e.g. boron or cadmium alloy, comprises a body 1 constituting both a radiation screen and a pressure-resistant container, the open end of the cavity within the body being sealed by an inner cover 3 and outer cover 4. The massive cover 3 is loosely mounted for limited axial movement within the body 1 and has cavities 24 for receiving the upper ends of the fuel elements. A seal between the body 1 and cover 3 permitting this axial movement comprises an annular member 10 of serpentine cross-section, the upper and lower ends of this member being secured to rings 11, 12, these rings being respectively sealed to the cover 3 and body 1 by annular metal packings 13, 14 and bolts 15, 16. The cover 4 is secured by nuts 23 screwed on to necked-down bolts 18 making a screw connection at their bottom ends with bores 19 in the body 1, the bolts being surrounded by lead sleeves 21. Should the flask be subjected to a high deceleration due to a fall, the mass of the fuel elements 7 and coolant 8 acting on the cover 3 may cause the cover 3 to move until it abuts the cover 4; however, the seal is maintained by member 10 and packings 13, 14. Further, this action does not cause breakage of the bolts 18 since they may elastically or plastically extend. A steel jacket 27 around the body 1 forms an annular space 28 through which air coolant may be pumped via pipes 27a, 27b.
