Abstract

986,344. Shielded containers for radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 4, 1961 [July 6, 1960], No. 24094/61. Heading B4Q. A container for transporting spent fuel elements comprises inner and outer stainless steel chambers 16, 17 separated by a lead mass 18, the chamber 16 receiving a basket (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) formed of vertical aluminium tubes accommodating the fuel elements. The container is loaded under water and after insertion of the basket a cover 19 of stainless steel is locked in position to compress a packing 20. A further cover 24 of lead lined with stainless steel is secured by clamps (Fig. 6, not shown) to compress a packing 26. The cover 24 contains a cavity 28 opening at 29 to the cover exterior and serving to receive the entrapped air. Two exhauster tubes 36, 37 opening at their lower ends into the bottom and top of the chamber 16 permit the water to be drawn off and replaced before unloading, these tubes being normally sealed at their upper ends by plugs (Fig. 5, not shown). The container is removably mounted on a base plate 31 lined with a rubber cushion.
