Abstract

867,267. Containers for transporting radioactive materials. EDLOW LEAD CO. Sept. 8, 1959 [Oct. 17, 1958], No. 30614/59. Class 39(4). In a cask 20 for transporting spent fuel elements and comprising an inner stainless steel container 10 separated from a stainless steel casing 11 by a lead shield 12, iron fins 17, Fig. 2 are welded to the inner surface of the casing 11 and extend into the shield to improve the transfer of heat generated within the container, by the fuel, to the exterior atmosphere. In a modification, Fig. 5, copper fins 25 welded to the casing 23 extend through the lead shield 24 to the inner container 22. The cask has handles 14 and a plug 13 and is removably mounted on a base 16.
