Abstract

797,309. Containers for radio active materials. POWER-GAS CORPORATION. Ltd. Dec. 31, 1956 [Jan. 5, 1956], No. 382/56: Class 98(1) A container for radio-active material, Fig. 1, consists of a first cylindrical member 2 closed at one end and adapted at the other end to receive one end of a second cylindrical member 4, the other end of which is closed by a radiation permeable member 5, the members 2, 4 being filled with lead 8, 7 serving as shielding, the lead fillings together defining an axial tubular cavity 9 extending up to member 5 for receiving radio-active material. The members 2, 4 are joined as by screw threads, and a handle 10 and a disc 3 are mounted at the closed end of member 2. The thickness of the lead filling 8 is sufficient to absorb radiation in the direction of the handle, while radiation is emitted freely in the opposite direction. A storage vessel 11, Fig. 2, consists of inner and outer members 12, 14 with a lead filling 13 between them. The container 1 may be slid into the inner member 12, whereupon the radiation from the source is absorbed in all directions. The vessel 11 has feet. 17 and a handle 16. The container may be held for irradiation by a holder 18, Fig. 3, which has inner and outer walls 19, 21 fixed to an annular member 20 and having a lead filling 22 between them. The holder is fixed in the required position, e.g. by a clamping ring or by screw-threaded engagement of a support with a nut 26 welded to outer member 21. The container 1 is inserted in holder 18 for irradiation, and returned to storage vessel 11 when not in use. The disc 3 of the container has curved keyhole slots which fit over headed studs 23 on the storage vessel 11 and the holder 18, and allow the container to turn slightly so that it is retained in position.
