Abstract

1378637 Pneumatic conveyers BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 31 Dec 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 46793/70 Heading B8A [Also in Divisions E1 and F1] In a jet pump 1 for removing a mass of particles from a ship's hold, which comprises an inlet passage 2 through which operating fluid, e.g. steam, passes to a nozzle 4 to induce upward flow of particles through a passage 7, part of the operating fluid may be diverted to fluidize the mass before it is removed. The operating fluid, e.g. water in the case of iron ore, may pass downwardly through a port 5 and/or transversely through ports (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), the ports being controlled by respective hydraulically actuated valves 12, 13 which comprise plungers 14, 15 and pistons 17, 18. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the valves 12, 13 are mounted at opposite ends of a common plunger (22) which carries one piston (23). The ports (6) may be arranged such that the issuing fluid produces rotation of the pump about a vertical axis. Passage 7 may have more than one inlet and more than one outlet.
