Abstract

Electroless nickel plating of surfaces comprising metals, metal alloys, plastic and ceramics is carried out employing a stable ammoniacal hypophosphite-containing nickel complex salt bath. The bath having a density of from 10 to 12 DEG Bé at 20 DEG C is admixed at short regular intervals, at a bath temperature of from 60 to 100 DEG C, with a concentrated ammoniacal nickel complex salt solution comprising nickel salt, sodium citrate, ammonium chloride and ammonia (supplementary solution A) and a concentrated sodium hypophosphite solution (supplementary solution B), such an amount of electrolyte being withdrawn periodically from the bath and being replaced by water, that the bath density is maintained between 12 and 30<o> Bé and the pH is maintained between 6 and 8. In continuous operation of the bath over long operating periods, uniformly bright, smooth, strongly adhesive and corrosion-resistant nickel coatings are obtained.
