Abstract
1,147,506. Treating polymers. SUMITOMO NAUGATUCK CO. Ltd. 9 Nov., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966], No. 50975/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C7] A thermoplastic resin moulding, e.g. of ABS resin, acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer, polyethylene, polystyrene or polypropylene, is pretreated prior to non-electrolytic plating by immersion in a solution of sulphuric acid and chromic acid or chromate whilst carrying out electrolytic reduction of chromium ions in the solution during the period of immersion. The solution may also contain nitric acid, phosphoric acid or acetic acid. The electrolysis may be carried out using a lead anode, and an iron- or chromium-base alloy as cathode, e.g. stainless steel, chromium-aluminium-steel, Nichrome (Regd. Trade Mark), high silicon steel or austenitic cast iron. The solution may be agitated during electrolysis, e.g. by mechanical stirring or by having air blown through it. The mouldings may then be dipped in hydrochloric acid containing first stannous chloride and then palladium chloride, coated non-electrolytically with nickel or copper and may thereafter be electro-plated with copper, e.g. from a copper sulphate bath containing no lustring agent.
