Abstract

1378112 Flavouring tobacco LIGGETT & MYERS Inc 7 March 1973 [7 March 1972] 11024/73 Headings A2B and A2C A tobacco flavour enhancer is made by heating together a solvent, valine and a carbonyl compound at a temperature from 100‹C to 200‹C. Any convenient liquid may be used as the solvent, including water and mineral or vegetable oils, but polyhydric solvents are preferred of which glycerol, propylene glycol and d-sorbitol are exemplified. Either optical isomer of valine, or mixtures of amino acids derived by hydrolysis of proteins with a high valine content, may be used. Carbonyl compounds exemplified are d-glucose, d-maltose, draffinose, d-fructose, dihydroxy acetone, and pyruvaldehyde. The reaction may be catalysed, e.g. with rutin, quercitin or ascorbic acid. The reaction product may be improved by steam stripping, by extraction with an immiscible solvent, or by dialysis, to remove the more volatile or lower molecular weight materials.
