Abstract

1378063 Battery electrolytes OMF CALIFORNIA Inc 14 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 52613/72 Heading H1B An electrolyte for an electric energy storage device comprises an aqueous solution containing a metal halide and the (unidentified) reaction product of ammonia or an amine and an epichlorohydrin. Virtually all metals are suggested for the halide with the exception of the alkali and alkaline earth metals. Zinc or iron cobalt or nickel is preferred. Chlorine and bromine are the suggested halogens. The particular application is to zinc-chlorine cells involving the use of chlorine hydrate. The epichlorohydrin reaction product in the electrolyte acts to prevent dendrite formation during charging of the cell. It may be necessary to add a concentrate of the reaction product to the electrolyte immediately prior to each recharging of the cell. A great variety of amines are suggested. They may be reacted with epichlorohydrin in water. In the only specific example, hexamethylenetetramine and epichlorohydrin are reacted in water at 100‹ C. and the product steam distilled out. The distillate is brought to pH 5-6 and added to aqueous zinc chloride to produce the electrolyte.
