Abstract

1377716 Hydroxyhexadecanoic acid salts UNILEVER Ltd 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972 20 Nov 1972] 333/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Sodium or potassium 4-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid is prepared by (A) reacting dodecyl bromide with beta carbomethoxypropionyl chloride in the presence of magnesium and cadmium chloride to form methyl 4-oxohexadecanoate, (B) saponifying the methyl 4-oxohexadecanoate with NaOH in ethyl alcohol solution to form sodium 4-oxohexadecanoate, (C) reducing the sodium 4-oxohexadecanoate with sodium borohydride in aqueous NaOH and acidifying with HCl to precipitate the 4-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid, (D) neutralizing the 4-hydroxy-hexadecanoic acid with NaOH or KOH to produce the desired salt. Sodium or potassium salts of 4-hydroxytetradecanoic acid, 4-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid and 4-hydroxy-eicosanoic acid are prepared in a similar manner. The compounds are anionic surfactants and are used in detergent compositions (see Division C5).
