Abstract

The invention comprises 3-hydroxy-3,7,11, trimethyl - 4,6,10 - dodecatrienoic acid, its alkali and alkaline-earth metal salts, and the preparation thereof by reacting pseudoionone with an a -haloacetate in the presence of zinc, saponifying the ester thus formed to the corresponding salt and, if desired, hydrolysing the salt to produce the free acid; additionally, if desired, the free acid is reacted with a base derived from an alkali metal to produce an alkali metal salt and again, if desired, a solution of the latter salt is reacted with a water-soluble alkaline earth metal salt to form an alkaline earth metal salt of the acid. In examples, pseudoionone is reacted with zinc and ethyl bromoacetate to form, after decomposition of the complex, ethyl 3-hydroxy,3,7,11-trimethyl-4,6,10-dodecatrienoate which is saponified by alcoholic potash and acidified to give the free acid; the free acid is neutralized by caustic soda to give the sodium salt; and, the sodium salt treated with calcium chloride to give the calcium salt.
