Abstract
The invention comprises a salt of an optically active alkaloid base and D 5-3-ethylenedioxy-11-keto-etienoylpyruvic acid and the preparation thereof by reacting dl-D 5-3-ethylenedioxy-11-keto-etienoylpyruvic acid with an optically active alkaloid base to form the corresponding isomeric d and l salts and separating said d and l salts by fractional crystallization. Subsequent alkaline hydrolysis, e.g. with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, produces D 5 - 3 - ethylenedioxy - 11,20 - diketopregnene which by treatment with acid, e.g. perchloric acid in tetrahydrofuran, yields 11-ketoprogesterone. Examples disclose the preparation of strychnine, brucine and ephedrine salts of D 5 - 3 - ethylenedioxy - 11 - keto - etienoylpyruvic acid.
