Abstract

1342247 Preparation of substituted succinates and malonates UNILEVER Ltd 17 Aug 1971 [20 Aug 1970] 40201/70 Addition to 1293753 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Disodium p-deeyl benzyl malonate is prepared by reacting decyl benzene with a chloromethylation solution to produce p-decylbenzyl chloride, which is reacted with diethyl malonate and sodium ethoxide, followed by saponification with methanolic NaOH. The corresponding n-dodecyl, n-hexadecyl and n-octadecyl compounds are likewise prepared. Phenylhexadecyl succinate is prepared by reacting hexadecyl benzene with maleic anhydride and benzoyl peroxide to form phenylhexadecyl succinic anhydride and hydrolysing with NaOH. A mixture of 5- and 6-phenylhexadecyl succinic acid sodium salts is prepared by treating hexadecyl succinic anhydride with benzene and aluminium chloride, followed by water and HC1 to produce the anhydride, which is hydrolysed with aqueous NaOH.
