1377690 Power supplies for plasma arc systems INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENT E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 17 Oct 1972 47796/72 Heading H2H A power supply for a plasma arc system comprises a transformer 4 having secondary windings 5 connected to a rectifier circuit 7 for supplying current to an arc between an electrode 8 and a workpiece 9, and secondary windings 6 connected to a capacitor 11 via a rectifier circuit 10 so that the arc current increases smoothly as the capacitor becomes charged. The primary windings 3 of the transformer are connected to a three-phase inductivecapacitive current stabilizer 1. Initially contacts 2 are closed, a contact 13 is opened and a circuit 15, comprising a low power D.C. source and an oscillator, strikes an ionizing arc between the electrode 8 and a nozzle 14. Since the total current is stabilized by the circuit 1, the gradual decrease of the charging current for the capacitor 11 ensures a gradual increase in the arc current supplied by the windings 5.
