Abstract

1377496 Manufacturing sealed beam lamps BRITISH SEALED BEAMS Ltd 13 March 1972 [15 May 1971] 15167/71 Heading H1F In a method of making a sealed beam lamp, the pinch seal of the envelope of a twin filament tungsten-halogen bulb 13 is cemented in a predetermined position in an aperture in a baseplate 24, the bulb and base-plate are then secured, e.g. by rivets, in a predetermined position relative to conductive socket terminals 27, 28, 29 of a ceramic bridge 26 and the bulb filaments are electrically connected to the socket terminals. The sub-assembly of bulb, base-plate and bridge is then engaged by lead wires 31, 32, 33 extending through the socket terminals from a reflector 11 where they are connected to terminals on the exterior of the reflector. The sub-assembly is correctly positioned with respect to the reflector by sliding on the lead wires which are then secured to the socket terminals. The cement used for securing the bulb to the base-plate is preferably a single sand and a blend of clays bonded together with sodium silicate and with added water glass. A light shield 34 may be mounted on an extended lead wire 32. Optical jigs are used to obtain the desired positioning of the components during assembly. The twin filament tungsten-halogen bulb 13, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), includes a longitudinally extending filament with an associated dish reflector for giving the dipped beam and a transverse filament for giving the main beam.
