Abstract

1377491 Storage bunkers W H DICKINSON ENG Ltd 16 Feb 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4954/71 Heading B8E An apparatus for feeding material comprises a silo 2, Fig. 1, with a conveyer 4 which discharges material and an infeed conveyer 24 which fills the silo to a predetermined depth from the discharge end by oscillating longitudinally over a preset distance until the required depth is reached and then oscillating about a mean position which is displaced away from the discharge end of the silo. The oscillations are controlled by a photo-cell P1, mounted on the conveyer,which causes the conveyer 24 to move to the left until the cell is shaded by a plate 68 or by the pile of material. A timer controls the extent of movement to the right. When half the length of the silo has been filled a limit switch L1 reverses the direction of feed of the conveyer 24 and a photo-cell P2 takes over control of the oscillatory motion until filling is complete and motion is arrested by a limit switch L2. If the discharge conveyer 4 is operating during tne filling operation, the direction of movement of the point about which oscillations occur is determined by the relative rates of filling and emptying. Limit switches L4, L5 acts as safety overrun switches. Proximity switches or switches operated by pendulums may replace the photocells. In an alternative arrangement, the feed conveyer is equal in length to the silo and runs in one direction only and is controlled by a single photo-cell P1.
