1376875 Etching VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT GORNOI GEOMEKHANIKI I MAKSHEIDERSKOGO DELA and LENINGRADSKY STALE PROKATNY ZAVOD 16 April 1973 20009/73 Heading B6J Stainless steel strip is heated at a low temperature (e.g. 400-450‹ C. for 5-8 hours) in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. air) to form an oxide film over its surface, the surface is masked in areas where it is desired to form scale marks (lines, numerals), and etched with ferric chloride to remove at least the oxide in the unmasked areas, the masking material (e.g. paint) then being removed, so that the resulting scale marks show as dark oxide against a bright steel background.
