Abstract

1375939 Road traffic signals on vehicles ESSEX INTERNATIONAL Inc 4 Oct 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 45756/72 Heading G4Q [Also in Division H1] A combined stop warning, direction signalling and hazard warning system for a motor vehicle includes a switch (see Division H1) wherein a stack of pads of non-conductive elastomer loaded with conductive particles is compressed to render the pads conductive. As shown, a motor 52 can drive a cam 82 having lobes 83 which bear against respective end plates 69, 69a of two stacks of pads 64 and 64a to subject the pads to progressively increasing compression which is suddently relieved by dwell areas 84. The pads of stack 64 are connected to right indicator lamps 1, 2, 3, 4 while stack 64a is connected to left indicator lamps 5 to 8. A control switch 9 has movable bridges 10 and 15 which normally connect both sets of rear indicator lamps 1, 2, 3 and 5, 6, 7, via diodes 27 and 34, to a brakeoperated switch 22 for simultaneous steady illumination of the said lamps while braking. When a bridge 10 or 15 is moved to its position shown by dotted lines to indicate a right or left turn the supply line 19 is connected to the appropriate stack of pads 64 or 64a and, via diode 49 or 50, to motor 52. The first three pads of each stack are of differing sensitivities such that as the cam 82 revolves the lamps 1, 2, 3 or 5, 6, 7) are lit in sequence and then extinguished together. The sensitivity of the fourth pad may be the same as any of the other three such that a front lamp 4 (or 8) is also flashed. If hazard warning switch 54 is closed supply line 62 is connected to lines 57 and 58 whereby both stacks 64 and 64a and motor 52 are energized and both right and left indicator lamps are rendered operative.
