1375289 Continuous saponification process COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE G MAZZONI SpA 5 Dec 1972 [21 Jan 1972 56035/72 Heading C5D Aqueous soap base pastes of high fatty acid content (e.g. 80%) are prepared by continuously feeding preheated fatty acids at a temperature in the range of 50‹ to 120‹ C., together with one or more preheated aqueous alkali saponifying agents at a temperature in the range 50‹ to 120‹ C. and at a concentration of between 15% and 75% of alkali in the aqueous alkali, to a closed high viscosity material reactor, maintaining in the reactor a temperature of 70-170‹ C. and pressure of 1 to 15 atmospheres, recycling the reaction mixture in the reactor 10 to 100 times, and finally controlling the free alkalinity or acidity of the mixture in the reactor at a predetermined value by means of a millivoltmeter or viscosimeter. After leaving the reactor, the high temperature saponified mixture is reduced to atmospheric pressure with resultant reduction in water content of the final product.
