A process for the production of thioether alcohols or thioether carboxylic acids comprises the reaction between an olefinic hydrocarbon and a saturated mercaptoalcohol or mercaptocarboxylic acid in the presence of oxygen and the thioether alcohol or thioether carboxylic acid which is the expected reaction product. Examples describe the preparation of n - hexadecyl - # - hydroxyethyl sulphide from hexadecene and #-mercaptoethanol and isooctadecyl - # - hydroxyethyl sulphide from an octadecene and #-mercaptoethanol.
