Abstract
1374724 Plasma furnace VYSOKA SKOLA BANSKA OSTRAVA 6 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 5763/73 Heading H5H [Also in Division B1] A plasma furnace for melting metals comprises a plasma torch 2, a horizontal trough 1, in the melting space of the furnace, having end walls and being movable by supporting tubes 4 in the direction of its horizontal axis within the range of the melting effect of the plasma torch, and an observation glass 11 for the melting space of the furnace which when the furnace operates receives a supply of gas to create an excess gas pressure and divert evaporated metal away from the observation glass. In operation an electrical potential difference is applied between the torch and the trough via two electrically parallel paths comprising impedances 12, the relative values of the impedances of the two paths determining the direction of the plasma stream relative to the trough. The trough may have a double wall (Fig. 3, not shown) defining a space through which water can flow, or may have a number of water tubes in its wall (Fig. 2, not shown). Movement of the trough is effected by a nut running on a threaded rod 8 rotated by an electric motor 10.
