1374298 Organothio-substituted sulphonamides MONSANTO CO 29 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 60443/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises organothio-substituted sulphonamides, that is: (A) a compound having the formula wherein R is a monovalent radical selected from aryl where aryl is phenyl, naphthyl or xenyl; substituted said aryl wherein the substituents are C 1-5 alkyl, halogen, C 1-5 alkoxy or combinations thereof; alkyl hydrocarbon of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; phenyl substituted C 1-5 alkyl hydrocarbon; unsubstituted mono- and bi-cycloalkyl of 5 to 12 ring members; C 1-5 alkyl substituted mono- and bi-cycloalkyl of 5 to 12 ring members; and fused bi-oyclic rings of phenyl and a non-aromatic hydrocarbon ring; n<SP>1</SP> is 2, 3 or 4, and when n<SP>1</SP> is 2, R<SP>2</SP> contains 1 to 12 carbon atoms and is a divalent radical selected from alkylene, arylene, cycloalkylene and C 1-5 alkylene = [OOC(CH 2 ) n11 ] 2 where n<SP>11</SP> is 1 or 2; when n<SP>1</SP> is 3, R<SP>2</SP> is where n<SP>11</SP> is 1 or 2; when n<SP>1</SP> is 4, R<SP>2</SP> is where n<SP>11</SP> is 1 to 2, R<SP>1</SP> is independently selected from the same radicals as R, or is hydrogen or -A-N(R<SP>3</SP>)SO 2 R<SP>4</SP> where R<SP>4</SP> is independently selected from the same radicals as R, A is independently selected from the same radicals as divalent R<SP>2</SP>, and R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen, a radical R or a radical -SR<SP>5</SP> where R<SP>5</SP> is independently selected from the same radicals as R: (B) a compound having the formula where m is 1, 2, 3 or 4; R<SP>6</SP> is hydrogen or is independently selected from the same radicals as R; R<SP>7</SP> when m is 1 is selected from the same radicals as R, and when m is 2, 3 or 4 is selected from the same radicals as R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are as defined with reference to formula (A), and (C) a compound having the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are as defined with reference to formula (A); n is 2 or 3, and when n is 2, R<SP>8</SP> is independently selected from the same radicals as divalent R<SP>2</SP> in formula (A) and when n is 3, R<SP>8</SP> is phenyl. The compounds of the invention can be produced by condensing a N-halosulphonamide with mono- or dimercaptans or by converting the mercaptan to a sulphenyl halide and condensing the halide with a sulphonamide having a reactive hydrogen on the nitrogen.
