Abstract

1308521 Phenolic stabilizers ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 23 March 1970 13813/70 Headings C2B C2C and C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of Formula I where (1) X is -S-, -CR 2 -, -C(O)-, -CH 2 -CH 2 - or -CH 2 -A-CH 2 - where R is hydrogen, C 1-18 alkyl or aryl and A is C 1-16 alkylene or arylene, (2) R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>111</SP> and R<SP>1111</SP> are hydrogen, C 1-18 alkyl, or aryl, (3) Y is where R is hydrogen, C 1-18 alkyl or aryl, m is 0 to 10, A<SP>1</SP> is -(CH 2 ) x -S-(CH 2 ) x - or -(CH 2 ) x -S-(CH 2 ) y -S-(CH 2 ) x -, x is 0 to 10, y is 0 to 10 and R<SP>11111</SP> is alkyl, (4) Z is when n is 1 to 15, or alternatively, when n is 2 to 15, Z is halogen or is -R or -OR, where R is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, and (5) n is 1 to 15, except that when Y is n is 2 to 15. The compounds of Formula I may be prepared by reacting a suitable bisphenol with a condensing agent. In a comparative Example (IV) a compound of analogous structure to the compounds of Formula I was prepared by reacting dipinene diphenol with triphenylphosphite. The compounds of Formula I are used as antioxidant stabilizers for polyolefins.
