Abstract
1373485 Production of hot pressed fibre reinforced metal GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 21 Oct 1971 [24 July 1970] 35932/70 Heading C7D A sintered fibre reinforced metal composite e.g. a bearing is made by heating a mixture of the fibres and an organic acid salt of the metal to thermally decompose the salt and then hot pressing the mixture. The fibres preferably 0À5" maximum length may be of C, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , SiC, Si 3 N 4 , B, BN or asbestos and form less than 50% volume preferably 10-25% of the composite. The metal matrix may be Sn on Pb base alloys, Co, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Ag, Bi, Cd, Ag on Au or their alloys. The organic salts are the formates, oxalates or tartrates or in the case of Zn and Ag the lactates. In an example, C fibres are dispersed in a solution of lead acetate to which formic acid is added to precipitate lead formate containing dispersed C fibres. The precipitate is heated at 220-280 degrees to decompose the salt and the mixture is hot pressed at 5-20 t.s.i. and 220-300C. Alternatively the C fibres may be dispersed in a lead formate solution at 100C and precipitation effected by cooling. The composite may be hot pressed on to a backing strip.
