Abstract
1325392 Modifying alloy surfaces; electroless platinum plating E C BETZ 26 Oct 1971 [2 Dec 1970] 49715/71 Headings C7A C7F and C7U A metallic catalyst is formed from an alloy of Al 4À5 to 25% with Fe, Ni, Mo, Ti, V or W by contacting it with an oxidizing acid, e.g. nitric, phosphoric or aqua regia, contacting with an alkali metal hydroxide as a melt or solution to form aluminium hydroxide, and then heating (100 to 450‹C.) in the presence of oxygen to convert the hydroxide to oxide. The alloy may contain a further metal e.g. Co, Cr, or Mn. The metal may be in the form, of sheets, ribbons, screens or granules. The aluminium oxide may be converted to the gamma form by subsequent heating at 300 to 750‹C. A catalytic metal may be applied e.g. by electrolytic or electroless plating to the catalyst so formed e.g. metals of Group VIII, rare earth metals, Ag, Ti, Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Mo, W, V, Re, Th or Ac. A further layer of alumina may be applied by electro-plating aluminium, then contacting with an alkali metal hydroxide, reheating, re-oxidizing and recalcining. In an example Pt is deposited using a chloroplatinic acid, sodium carbonate, and sodium formate solution. After coating, the layer is heated. Specific examples of the alloys are (1) Al 5, Fe 70, Cr 20 and remainder other metals or non- metals e.g. Co, Si and Mn, and (2) Fe 70À85, Cr 22À0, Al 4À5, Co 0À5, Mn 1À0, C 0À15, and Si 1À0.
