Abstract

1373282 Stretch levelling SCHLOEMANN AG 7 April 1972 [7 April 1971] 16135/72 Heading B3E [Also in Division E2] A stretch levelling machine comprises a stretch gripper head 3 movable by an hydraulic piston and cylinder 4a, 4b, to stretch a workpiece, and a counter gripper head 6 connected by a steplessly variable length means to an anchoring device 9 engageable in one of a plurality of positions. In the Figure, a key 14 on the anchoring means 9 is located in the appropriate one of a series of recesses 16 in a member 15 set in foundation 1, as determined by the length of the workpiece 13. The anchoring means 9 may be driven by hydraulically operated wheels running on rails in the foundation. The counter gripper head 6 is then advanced by an hydraulic ram 11, 12, as shown, or by hydraulically operated wheels 6a, 6c, to engage with one end of the workpiece, and is further advanced to move the workpiece into the stretch gripper head 3. The counter gripper head 6 is then looked in position by an hydraulically operated clamp 10 surrounding a tie rod 8, and the gripper head 3 engaged with the workpiece. The workpiece is then stretched by operation of piston and cylinder 4a, 4b, the stroke of which is thus confined to that necessary to effect stretching.
