[Also in Division B3] A fluid-operated press, particularly for assembling together mating component parts of a workpiece, comprises a ram 2 slidable in uprights 3 and connected at its ends to doubleacting piston/cylinder assemblies 5, 6. The press ram is of rectangular shape and is slidable at its corners in four uprights such as 3, 4 connected to a base 13 and an upper frame 17. Tie rods 18 extend within the uprights. At each end of the ram 2 is an elongated support 19 connected by a split ring 16 to a hollow piston 5 working in a cylinder 6 secured by another split ring 14 to the frame 17. The hollow piston 5 passes over a fixed piston 8 secured at 12 to the base 13. The downstroke of the ram 2 is effected by pressure fluid supplied into the cylinders 6 through ducts 7. The upstroke is effected by pressure fluid supplied through ducts 9 in the fixed piston 8. Screw stops 30 interconnected by a chair 31 driven by a motor 32, limit the downstroke of the ram and the latter may be held in a raised position by a pawl 25 actuated by air motors 24 and engaging teeth 27a in racks 21 attached to the ram 2. The press bed 1 is movable laterally by rollers 38 running on rails 39 which may be lowered by hydraulic cylinder units 40 to bring the bed into contact with the base 13 where it is clamped in its operative position by clamps 41 operated by pneumatic cylinders 45. Pressure cushions 48 are provided in the ram and air chambers with dashpots may be provided in the bed.
