Abstract
1372360 Levelling railway track BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 25 Nov 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 57038/70 Heading E1G In a method of correcting the height and/or cross-level of a railway track, repeated vertical loadings of an intensity greater than the normal traffic loading are applied to the sleepers, towards one or both ends thereof, to compress the underlying ballast. In the machine illustrated a rigid vehicle body 11 loaded by weights 7 and having lockable suspension springs 9 is hauled by a generator vehicle 1 and is provided on each side with a ram 5 which can apply a loading either to the rail or directly to the sleeper - e.g. through a U-shaped head straddling the rail. If a sleeper end is too low it is over-raised by inserted ballast before applying the ram(s) 5. The ballast may be fluidised by vibrating tines (not shown). One ram 5 may be used to hold one sleeper-end down in its existing position while the other end is forced down by repeated loadings. The specification includes diagrammatic curves showing ballast deformation under different sleeper loadings.
